Relive the Yellowjackets 1973 -1974 football season in the following pages. Fifty years ago, the Jackets football hopeful received a big shot in the arm with the hiring of Coach Don Markham.
Don Markham, the high school football coach known for his high-scoring power I and double wing offenses, started at Colton High in our senior year. Markham coached at 10 high schools in a career that spanned 45 years, including Colton, Ramona, two stints at Bloomington, Rialto and Pacific. He compiled 312 victories at the high school level, 265 of those in California. Markham guided Colton High to a CIF Southern Section championship in 1978. He brought Bloomington High CIF championships in 1994, 1996 and 1997. The 1994 team set a then-national record by scoring 880 points during the season. Markham also led a team to section title at L.A. Baptist (1971). His other stops included Bishop Amat, Leuzinger, Compton and Bandon (Ore.). He also set records for most points in a half (84), second highest score in a game (144) and most rushing yardage in a season (5,813 yards).
